Columbus Crew Stadium

Pre-Construction Technology Planning For the First Soccer-Oriented Stadium Ever Built in the U.S.

The Columbus Crew Soccer Club is a member of the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, a men's professional soccer league sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation, representing the sport's highest level in the U.S. and Canada. The Crew was established in Columbus, Ohio in 1996 as one of ten charter MLS clubs and is owned by the families of Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam and former team doctor Pete Edwards.

The City of Columbus is building the Crew a new $300-million home in the center of the city’s Confluence Village neighborhood, a mixed-use development with residential and commercial buildings. The new Crew Stadium is the first soccer-specific stadium to be built in the U.S. and will seat 20,000 spectators, including 30 suites and 1,900 club seats, upon its completion in Summer 2021.

Level-1+BCL JV provided the IT and security design for the new Crew Stadium using the Construction Management At Risk (CMR) method, an innovative approach to construction project delivery that involves working during the initial planning/pre-construction phases within a defined schedule at a fixed price. This makes it possible to assess and meet project specifications and requirements prior to bid rather than right before construction begins.

Working with a budget of approximately $1 million, Level-1+BCL JV collaborated with the Crew’s owners and IT department to identify their specific needs for IT infrastructure and security equipment and create solutions to meet the needs of the stadium for staff and fans. This included conferring with the Crew’s IT department on the locations of the tech closets and connecting temporary spaces to the existing network. The project was completed using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software in collaboration with the architect.

Level-1+BCL JV’s design solution offers high density, high capacity wireless coverage and IT infrastructure to support the building’s IT usage for the next 10 years and security to meet the Crew’s unique needs.
