Hines VA Hospital Integrated AV System

Infrastructure and Equipment Upgrades for New Exercise Center for Veterans

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital offers primary, extended and specialty care for more than 57,000 U.S. military veterans in Cook, DuPage, and Will counties on a 147-acre campus 12 miles west of downtown Chicago and six community-based outpatient clinics. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, human resource management, and fiscal services with specialized clinical programs for blind rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurosurgery, radiation therapy, and cardiovascular surgery.

The VA hired Level-1 to design and install an audiovisual system, master antenna (MATV), and access control system as part of their renovation of a three-story building on the hospital’s campus to serve as an exercise facility for patients with additional space for staff meetings and other medical training functions.

The building’s infrastructure did not support modern power requirements and needed extensive work to replace older infrastructure, which included comprehensive site planning and close coordination to ensure that the facility would support the new technology.

As a subcontractor to A. Epstein & Sons International, Inc., Level-1 reviewed the architect’s designs, developed layouts for the technology needs, provided recommendations on the type of equipment that should be installed, supervised the installation of that equipment by the various vendors, and certified that the work had been completed.

Level-1’s solution consisted of deploying a Keyscan system for first-floor access control with a door controller mounted in the building’s telecommunications rooms. The exercise room required wall-mounted televisions and exercise equipment to be connected to the MATV and distributed audio from AV equipment mounted in a cabinet on the first floor. The second floor, used for private offices and conference rooms, required a TV connected to the MATV system. As video surveillance system and AV design lead, Level-1 produced documentation required for pricing the installation by qualified vendors and assisted in developing a detailed design package for structured cabling and audiovisual systems.
