Hines Veterans Hospital Outdoor Security Cameras

Installing High-Tech Security Cameras to Better Monitor the Hospital’s Parking Lots

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital offers primary, extended, and specialty care for more than 57,000 U.S. military veterans in Cook, DuPage, and Will counties on a 147-acre campus 12 miles west of downtown Chicago and six community-based outpatient clinics. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, human resource management, and fiscal services with specialized clinical programs for blind rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurosurgery, radiation therapy, and cardiovascular surgery.

The VA wanted to add a surveillance system to its Illinois and Missouri Parking Lots to better monitor and investigated activities on the premises and hired Level-1 to install high-tech security cameras and compatible monitoring software. Level-1’s solution deployed Power over Ethernet (PoE) Internet Protocol (IP) pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) Pelco video surveillance cameras to allow for high-quality video capture of both parking lots. As powering cameras in open areas requires significant infrastructure upgrades, Level-1 utilized the existing electrical infrastructure from the parking lots’ light poles to add data transport cables to the existing housing for protection from the weather. Cameras were wired via Cat-6 UTP cable to the hospital’s telecommunications rooms. As video surveillance system design lead, Level-1 produced documentation for distribution to qualified installation vendors interested in bidding on the installation and assisted in developing a detailed design package for structured cabling and audiovisual systems.
